Chobble Tickets vs DigiTickets

DigiTickets is a managed ticketing platform run from Exeter by Digital Ticketing Systems Ltd, and the company says it supports more than 1,000 venues, including zoos, farm parks, museums and heritage railways. This page compares it to Chobble Tickets on pricing, features and attendee data.

Open source & flat fee DigiTickets alternative

Chobble Tickets is ticketing software made in the UK by a community interest company, a structure that locks the company's assets to community benefit. Its source code is published under the AGPL-3.0-only licence, so anyone can read it, keep their own copy of it, or run that copy themselves. DigiTickets is proprietary and does not publish its source code.

Chobble Tickets charges a published £50/year or £5/month for managed hosting, which covers hosting, updates, backup tools and support, with no charge on any ticket sold. Charities, community groups, artists and musicians pay £25/year on the annual plan. DigiTickets publishes no price: each client's rate is quoted after a scoping process, then set against how the first three months of sales went.

Pricing comparison

DigiTickets prices by quote. Its FAQ describes three charge models: a fixed price per transaction, a fixed price per ticket, or a percentage of the value of ticket sales. Whichever of the three would have worked out cheapest over the organiser's first three months of sales becomes the pricing plan.

The invoice for those charges is raised at the end of each month and collected 28 days later by direct debit. Packages carry no set-up fee and include training, support and lifetime upgrades. The ProPoint point of sale system is charged separately, as a monthly licence per till on a sliding scale, with till hardware available through a partner.

Chobble Tickets charges a flat £50/year or £5/month for managed hosting, with no per-ticket platform fees. Charities, community groups, artists and musicians pay £25/year for the same managed hosting on the annual plan.

Payment processing stays separate on both sides. Chobble sites take Stripe, Square or SumUp, and the money goes directly to the organiser's own account. DigiTickets' FAQ lists Worldpay, Stripe, Payyo, PaymentSense, PayPal and SagePay as gateways, and Payyo, a payment service that works exclusively with DigiTickets, handles payments in more than 30 currencies.

Because DigiTickets publishes no rates, this page has no fee calculator row for it. The platform fee calculator covers the reviewed providers with published rates.

Getting started

Joining DigiTickets starts with a demo or callback request. A business development team discusses the requirement, a project management team scopes and configures the ticket site with you, and training follows. The FAQ puts a typical setup at two to four weeks.

With Chobble Tickets you can sign up without talking to anyone. Registration is online, and you configure your own site using the documentation.

Feature comparison

DigiTickets covers more of a venue's operations, with tills, kiosks, staff scheduling and marketplace distribution beside online sales. Chobble Tickets covers online ticket sales alone, and leaves more of the code and data under the organiser's control.

Both platforms handle

  • Online ticket sales with card payments
  • Stripe as one of the payment gateway options
  • Timed entry slots as well as general admission
  • Capacity limits on ticketed events
  • Configured prices and discounts
  • Automated emails around a booking
  • Editing and refunding orders from the admin area (refunds in Chobble Tickets)
  • Viewing customer records and sales reports
  • Booking pages branded with the client's own logo and colours

DigiTickets has features Chobble Tickets doesn't

  • Point of sale tills - ProPoint, a cloud till system, handles on-the-gate admissions, memberships, retail and food and drink, with a kitchen screen for table orders. Online tickets redeem through it at no extra charge
  • Self-service kiosks - customers buy on site from touchscreen machines
  • Staff scheduling - rotas planned against expected visitor numbers from pre-bookings
  • Channel management - ticket inventory pushed to travel marketplaces such as Expedia, GetYourGuide and Musement through a connection with Experience Bank
  • Memberships and gift vouchers - recurring membership payments, gift vouchers, animal adoptions and experience bookings sold beside ordinary tickets
  • Bookable resources - spaces such as party rooms offered for birthday parties and events, alongside group bookings
  • Retail products in the same sale - tickets, vouchers and shop products checked out in one transaction
  • Website design and build - the Website Vision team builds branded attraction websites with an event calendar, timetables, directories and park maps
  • More documented payment gateways - the FAQ lists Worldpay, PayPal, PaymentSense and SagePay beside Stripe and Payyo
  • Consultative onboarding - a dedicated project manager, branded setup, training and 7-day support

Chobble Tickets has features DigiTickets doesn't

  • Open source - the complete product source is published under AGPL-3.0-only. DigiTickets does not publish its source code
  • Self-hosting of the same product - run the platform on your own infrastructure with no Chobble software licence fee. DigiTickets is sold as a hosted cloud service
  • Encryption at rest - attendee data is stored encrypted, unlocked only by keys held by your own administrator accounts, plus the optional recovery account you can enable. DigiTickets' privacy notice describes encrypted connections and staff access limits, and does not describe how stored attendee records are protected
  • A published flat price - £50/year or £5/month with nothing charged on each ticket, sign-up included. DigiTickets shares its rates after a scoping conversation
  • A public-facing website and CMS - a homepage, content pages, news posts and a contact form, edited from the admin panel with Markdown for text and custom CSS for the design. In-product DigiTickets pages are for ticketing; a full website is the separately scoped Website Vision service
  • A choice of email providers - Resend, Postmark, SendGrid, or Mailgun, so confirmations come from your domain. DigiTickets' documentation does not describe choosing the sending provider
  • Full email template control - wording and layout of every email. Editing templates is not described in the DigiTickets material reviewed
  • SMS messages - text attendees about their booking. Text messaging is not described in the DigiTickets material reviewed
  • Deposits and balance payments - take a deposit now and the balance later. Not described in the DigiTickets material reviewed
  • Pay-what-you-want pricing - let buyers enter their own price above a minimum. Not described in the DigiTickets material reviewed
  • Calendar and RSS feeds - one feed listing all your events, so subscribers see new ones automatically. Not described in the DigiTickets material reviewed
  • Webhooks and an admin API - real-time notifications to your own systems, and authenticated creation and editing of events. The DigiTickets material reviewed documents named till and channel integrations, not a public API
  • Square and SumUp as payment providers alongside Stripe. DigiTickets' FAQ lists Worldpay, Stripe, Payyo, PaymentSense, PayPal and SagePay, and Square and SumUp are not listed
  • Complete database backups and event setup exported as versioned JSON - you can take both to another Chobble Tickets host. DigiTickets' privacy notice says client data is securely exported to the client when a contract ends

Data ownership

For ticket buyers' data, DigiTickets acts as the processor, which means it handles personal data on its clients' instructions, while the client stays the controller who decides how that data is used. Its privacy notice lists identity, contact, financial, transaction, technical, profile and usage data among what it processes, and states that personal data is not processed in any country outside the European Union. Sharing buyer data with other companies for marketing needs the buyer's opt-in consent.

On retention, the notice says client data is generally kept for seven years after a contract ends, and that when a client arrangement ends the client's data is securely exported to the client and then permanently deleted from the software.

With Chobble Tickets, attendee data is encrypted at rest: only the keys held by your own administrator accounts, plus the optional recovery account you can enable, unlock it. You can download a complete database backup yourself. Because the platform is open source, you can also self-host the same code on your own server instead of depending on Chobble as your host.

When DigiTickets might be the better choice

  • You run a visitor attraction and want ticketing, tills, kiosks, staff rotas and website building from one supplier
  • You sell memberships, gift vouchers, adoptions or experiences alongside ordinary admission
  • You want your tickets distributed onto travel marketplaces such as Expedia and GetYourGuide
  • You take food, drink and retail payments on site and want them in the same system as admissions
  • You want the supplier to scope, brand and configure the site with you, with training and 7-day support
  • You want a choice of payment gateways that includes Worldpay, PayPal or SagePay

When Chobble Tickets is the better choice

  • You want a price published on a page rather than agreed in a sales process
  • You want costs that do not rise with your sales, rather than a per-ticket, per-transaction or percentage rate that grows with them
  • You want to sign up and start setting up today, without a demo call and a two-to-four-week onboarding project
  • You value open source code and being able to self-host the same product
  • You want attendee data encrypted with keys you hold
  • You are a charity, community group, artist or musician, where managed hosting is £25/year
  • You want Square or SumUp to take payments, or a website and CMS included in the product
